On a number of times we have seen him make those unpredictable moves on the field but no one saw this coming. Leaving captaincy on account of failure is one thing but retiring from test cricket is a absolute shocker.

And to the critics, make no mistake: In a career spanning 90 Tests, MS Dhoni led in 60 games, winning 27 to become India's most successful captain

He could have easily chosen to quit as a captain and still continued as a wicket keeper batsman. By the way, in his last test he made a record for the most number of dismissals(catch and stumping) ever by an Indian wicket keeper in a test match!

Leaders must lead, set examples

Dhoni again proved that he is one of his kind. He has set an example for the generations to come that one needs to move on(quit) when the world still wonders WHY? and not drag it to the point where the world starts asking WHY NOT?

This move not only provides opportunity to Virat as a captain but also to those wicketkeepers in waiting who have been warming the bench for a long time now.

Not Just the Captain but a Wicketkeeper, Batsmen of Tall Order

Overall, he played 90 Tests in a career that began in 2005 and scored 4876 runs at an average of 38, with a high score of 224 against Australia in Chennai in 2013. As a wicketkeeper, he effected 294 dismissals, the fifth highest in Test cricket.


Dhoni not only shouldered the responsibility of Captaincy but also performed well as a wicketkeeper batsman. His work behind the stumps has been clinical and it will take some time for the selectors to find his right replacement. Definitely a tall order for the replacement wicketkeeper batsman. The vaccum created by his exit is huge.


He is undoubtedly, One of India's greatest Test captains under whose leadership India became the No. 1 team in the test rankings. As rightly said by BCCI: Thanks to him him for his enormous contribution to Test cricket and the laurels that he has brought to India.

You may have not been in the same league as other batting greats but you will be remembered for years to come. Not just for your calmness and hard work but also for the fact that you are undoubtedly the Greatest Cricketing Mind India has ever produced.

And the fact that you chose to exit without any frenzy, (so called) farewell test/ series just adds on to the respect.Kudos for a short and sweet career.
